BIG SUCCESS: Software developer James Sugrue, left, and graphic designer Tony Zwies with the app they developed and designed, that now features on the pre-launch material for Apple's iPhone4.
Two Timaru companies have more reason than most to be interested in the launch of Apple's iPhone4 this month – the promotional material for the new phone features their handiwork.
Although the latest iPhone was unveiled only last week, Apple's website features the new phone and a handful of the applications – or "apps" – it can run, as a taster to it going on sale later this month.
Among the four fitness apps featured on the new phone is Hundred PushUps, designed by Timaru company SoftwareX.
Programme designer James Sugrue has been selling the programme as an app for iPhones and iPod Touches for the past 18 months, but says seeing it used on Apple's iPhone promotion was pretty good.
"If Apple likes it, it means you are doing a reasonable job," Mr Sugrue said.
Just how big a deal it is becomes more obvious when one realises there are between 200,000 and 250,000 apps available to download to iPhones.
He said the redesign of the app by Timaru company Yellow Design had probably helped push it along. "I'm a computer programmer, not a designer," he said of the improvement Tony Zwies' design made to the app.
Mr Zwies' company usually does more traditional graphic design work, and has been involved in only a handful of app designs.
What he realised very quickly was the need for the app to be "super easy to use" and for the graphics to be very crisp and clear to be able to reproduce well on the device. Even though the design has obviously been successful on iPhones, perhaps ironically Mr Zwies does not actually own one of the devices.
While Mr Sugrue does not know whether the app's inclusion on Apple's site will actually boost sales of the app, both men are still happy that two small start-up companies in Timaru can have their work recognised by a massive international company.

The Winter 2010 Collection was an amazing project to be involved in, we worked along side Rachel from Callander Girl Photography and Tania. The theme for the winter collection was our 'Famous' Miss Super Hero. Our mission was to create nine posters pulling this super hero theme into the posters, look book and website.
Here is a taste of the posters.
Tania’s designs take full advantage of the easy-care qualities of New Zealand merino. Her highly innovative designs exploit the smooth, lightweight qualities of superfine Merino, which lends itself to layering without bulkiness. The layered look which can be dressed up or down, encapsulates versatility, combining the practical with high-end fashion.
